This was going to be fun. At least, Noah hoped it was. He’d never actually made fondue before. In fact, Noah didn’t have much cooking experience in general. His abilities as a chef were limited to making microwavable Easy Mac, and, at times, assembling a Lunchable pizza. Noah had found himself to be quite the master at the latter. Still, he knew he wasn’t that great of a cook, and that probably had to change sometime soon. After all, he was going off to college in a little less than a year and he still didn’t know how to cook. He could microwave things for his sister and make spaghetti and that was pretty much it. Even Noah knew that was pretty pathetic.
The idea of college terrified him. He was generally a very nonchalant person – he could roll with the punches, he maintained grace under fire. College was the one exception. It freaked him out just a little to know that in mere months, his college applications would be due, and months after that, he’d know where he was going to school. Months after that, he’d be enrolled in university, on the pathway to the rest of his life. He’d be doing equations in his sleep and would probably be farther away from home than he was comfortable with. And he’d be eating, sleeping, and studying with people he’d never met before. That was exciting and formidable all at once.
Just the thought of university sent a shudder through Noah’s system. “You’re insane, kid,” he mumbled, buttoning up his shirt. “Completely blimey batshit insane.” Exhaling slowly, he continued to button the shirt and look at himself in the mirror. “Well hello there, Mallory. Nice to meet you. I’m Noah,” he practiced, winking. No. That’s dumb. You’re dumb. “Don’t stress it, kid. She’ll love ya. Bring a cricket ball and she’ll fall madly in love with you,” he added, grinning at his reflection. Why am I talking to myself? Is that a squirrel?
Indeed it was a squirrel, perched happily on one of the branches outside Noah’s bedroom window. How he’d spotted a squirrel from the corner of his eye, and how a squirrel related to his delusional musings, no one would ever know. And, though his buttons were only halfway done, Noah stopped and ambled over to his window. Leaning on the windowsill, he beamed at the rodent. “’Ello, guvna,” he greeted, tipping an imaginary hat. “Luverly day we’re ‘avin, woo’nt ya say? Some noice we’tha we’ve got ‘ere,” he commented, motioning to the cloudless sky above as if conversing with squirrels was a daily occurrence. Focusing his attention back on the squirrel, he smiled. “You must think I’m completely bonkers. Violet, you’re turning violet!”
Of course the squirrel didn’t know how to respond – so it did the easiest thing possible. It looked at Noah, looked up at the top of the tree, and dashed off. Noah frowned, genuinely saddened for a moment, and then turned from the windowsill to his mirror. Quickly buttoning the rest of his shirt, he slipped on his Converse and grabbed his keys. Shuffling down the stairs, he ambled down into the kitchen. There, in all her jubilant six-year-old brilliance, sat his sister, clawing for the jar of Twizzlers on the countertop. Why his family had a Twizzler jar, Noah hadn’t a clue; for some reason, his family had an undying craving for them and had decided on keeping a jar full of the candy at all times. Jenny, obviously too short to reach the jar, had placed multiple objects – including flimsy cardboard boxes – on top of each other to add a few inches to her height.
Eyes widening, Noah dashed over to his sister and plucked her off the makeshift ladder of kitchen items. Grinning down at his sister, he grabbed two Twizzlers from the jar and handed her one. “Don’t do that again, alright? That’s not safe,” he warned, wagging his finger at her in a mockingly condescending manner.
“Why? Batman says it’s alright,” Jenny remarked, smirking up at her brother. Noah had to give her credit – she was exceptionally smart for her age. She knew how to fabricate ideas out of thin air to back herself up. Though they didn’t come in very handy, they were imaginative. “Robin swooped in and accidentally broke it” wasn’t an acceptable excuse as to why mom’s favorite vase was smashed in a million pieces. It was still cute, though, and that was why Noah loved his sister so much. She reminded him so much of himself when he was that age.
There he went again, thinking about how old he was and whatnot. Shaking the thought from his mind, he placed Jenny safely on the ground and folded his arms over his chest. “That’s what Poison Ivy wants you to think. She seduced Batman. She told him to tell you that when it really isn’t safe. Robin sent me, though. He wanted me to keep you safe and away from Poison Ivy’s evil powers,” he scolded, beaming.
Jenny giggled happily. “Noah, can we watch Nemo? You told me we’d watch Nemo!” she insisted, looking up at him with pleading eyes. Noah frowned slightly. “I can’t. I’m going to visit a friend right now,” he apologized, faltering when he saw Jenny’s happiness crumble and a deep frown set into her features. Crouching down to her level, he rested his hands on her shoulder. “Hey, hey, hey. None of this frowny business. Mister Twizzler doesn’t like to see you frown,” he coaxed, sticking his Twizzler in her line of vision. “Jenny, please don’t frown! If you frown, you will make me sad. No one likes a sad Twizzler!” he exclaimed, putting on a high-pitched, cartoon-y tone.
Enthralled, Jenny looked past the Twizzler and directed her attention to Noah. “Noah, how does Mister Twizzler know my name?” she asked, captivated. A smile crept onto Noah’s lips and he lowered his voice to a whisper, leaning in. “Magic,” he said quietly, beaming as Jenny giggled again. Pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead, he ruffled her hair. “We’ll watch Nemo as soon as I get back, alright? I pinky swear,” he offered, linking pinkies with her. “I’ll be back soon. I’ll bring you back a surprise, too. Me and my friend are making something special,” he added, grinning.
Once Jenny was satisfied with his response, Noah stood and took a few steps toward the pantry. Grabbing a bag of Dove chocolates, he closed the pantry door and turned toward the door. The chocolates were his mom’s, but he figured he’d be nice and give them to Mallory. He wasn’t quite sure whether they were making cheese or chocolate fondue, and if they were making the former, the chocolate would be good to use the next time. Besides, he hadn’t even formally met the girl and she’d invited him over to make fondue; the least he could do was give her something as a token of his appreciation.
“I love you, JimJam,” he called over his shoulder, traipsing out the door and to his car.
In minutes, he was on the road and headed to Mallory’s house. It took him awhile, but his Kia Spectra slowly crawled into Fox Chapel after a few minutes of searching. Now the challenge would be finding her house. As his car ambled down the streets of the neighborhood, Noah realized that Mallory’s family was probably quite rich. As he neared her house, the homes became increasingly lavish in their appearance. For a moment he felt awkward. His house was modest and comfortable, in the middle of Swisshelm Park. Mallory’s house was probably a mansion, spacious and extravagant. Wiping the thoughts from his mind, he slowed as he reached her house and pulled into the driveway. He’d never been one to judge, and Mallory’s house didn’t seem too different from his own. It was a hell of a lot bigger, that was for sure, but it had a cozy appearance to it, almost as if the McKenzie’s didn’t want to seem too smug by living in such a huge house. He liked it.
Grabbing the chocolate from the passenger seat, Noah climbed out of the car and locked it. Advancing across the property, he made his way to the front steps and rang the doorbell once. It was only then that he realized how awkward he looked, dressed like a ruffian and cradling a bag of chocolate in the middle of the richest neighborhood in Pittsburgh. He grinned, however, when he heard the familiar barking of a dog and the scuttle of paws on the floor. The barking increased in volume as the dog neared the door and Noah heard footsteps. Well, the McKenzies couldn’t be too bad if they had a dog that sounded that friendly. He had friendly dogs and he wasn’t mean; clearly, that same analogy could be made to a family he’d never met before. Being scared shitless of making fondue at a stranger’s house – not a fan.

Fondue was probably one of Mallory’s favorite things in the world. It just made her happy. She was a naturally happy girl, but the melting chocolate, sweet fruit and chocolate covered pretzels just made her ten times happier. Most of the people she knew thought she was crazy because of this, but Mallory merely thought it was because they were jealous of her experience with a fondue pot. After all, she had one at her house and one in her dorm. That had to count for something, right? Mallory’s fondue was usually located in her bed room, but she figured it was a little odd to invite a boy that she hardly knew into her room to make chocolate fondue. That would be the slightest bit awkward; so said fondue pot had been relocated to the kitchen. Mallory just had to hope and pray that none of her siblings would interrupt. There were too many of them for her liking.
Mallory stood in front of her mirror, fluffing up her blouse. She pulled the top of it up, being sure not to show too much skin. She didn’t want to come off as a slut. Although Mallory knew that she wasn’t one, this boy sure didn’t. If she wore an outfit that showed too much it would come off as slutty. She was sure of it. Mallory jumped, seeing her dog running out of her room at the sound of a car rolling down the street. It wasn’t Noah’s just yet, but Dani insisted on being a spaz and trudging down the wooden steps of Mallory’s supposed ‘mansion’. Mallory’s house may be located in Fox Chapel, one of the most expensive places to live, but they weren’t all that rich. The outside of the house may look a little bit too lush for some, but the inside was homey, cozy, and old-fashioned. You walk up the cobble-stoned pavement and onto the porch with white garden chairs and little white tables to match, open the glass door to reveal an old white door with a small ‘Welcome!’ sign on it with fake hummingbirds fluttering about it. Mallory’s mom had picked that out before they even expanded the family. It was a tiny bit faded, but her mother figured that gave it some character. It said that they had used it for quite a long time and that everyone was welcome in their home.
She bit down on her lip, slicking a hand through her hair to make sure that it was smooth, straight, and tangle-free. Usually Mallory wasn’t self conscious about her looks, but this time was different. She was hanging out with a boy that seemed to have similar interests to her. He had to be similar to her if he had agreed to make fondue with her in her own home when they’d only actually seen each other in the halls and had never formally met. Suddenly, she could feel eyes burning a hole in her back. She wasn’t quite sure whose eyes they were per say, but she could take a wild guess and say that it was probably Colie. That evil girl never left her alone. She never even thought that it could be Adrianne.
With that assumption being made, she turned on her heel to face the eyes. Mallory’s assumption would be wrong, because the girl standing in the door way was not Colie. It was none other than Adrianne, and within a few seconds, Carter appeared from behind her. Carter was trying to stifle laughter and Adrianne had a widespread grin on her face. Mallory raised a brow at the two of them, crossing her arms across her chest. "What’s so funny?" She asked the two. Maybe it was her outfit. She did think she looked a tiny bit like a sailor, but it was still a cute outfit and she was sticking with it. Besides, if Noah made fun of her for it then he wouldn’t be a very good friend now would he?
Adrianne’s eyes widened when she noticed Mallory take offense to their expressions. She bit down on her lip before looking up at the girl and speaking. "Got a hot date tonight or something?” Adrianne asked with a laugh, Carter chiming in with her soft laughter. Mallory listened to their laughs, soft like bells tingling in the distance. She couldn’t help but wonder if she looked dressed up for a date. She didn’t think she did. In fact, Mallory thought she looked rather cute. With that, she shook her head at Adrianne and Carter.
"No. My friend Noah is coming over and we’re going to make chocolate fondue. It’s not a date!” Mallory exclaimed with an exasperated look on her face. The two siblings couldn’t help but laugh at how quickly she had defended herself, but she knew it wasn’t a date. She bit down on her bottom lip, glancing down at her feet. She was embarrassed at how defensive she had gotten. Mallory looked up at the two, who were still trying not to laugh at her. “It’s really not a date, guys…” She trailed off, tucking her brunette hair behind her ears. When she heard the door bell, she began to walk towards the top of the stairs.
Mallory bounded down them, Dani in tow. She grabbed Dani’s collar, trying to calm the dog down. "Shhh, calm down," She whispered, rubbing the dog’s ears softly. "Don’t be scared, girl, it’s just my friend." She laughed, realizing she was talking to her dog again and slowly let go of the collar. Before she knew it, Dani was pounding down the stairs faster than she could. It was then that she heard the door open. Who in God’s name got there before her? Her eyes widened and she began to panic, bolting down the hallway. Dani was already at the door when she realized her little brother, Roman, had answered it.
Roman raised a brow, looking up at the boy with a toothy grin. One of his two front teeth were missing, which made the smile only a little bit more awkward. "Hi!" The boy exclaimed with a grin. Dani appeared by his side. "Are you Mal’s boyfriend?" He asked, bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet. Of course Noah wasn’t Mallory’s girlfriend, but Roman had always thought Mallory had one, so he asked almost every guy that came to the door; including the UPS guy. That was an interesting story that Mallory had to explain to her parents.
She heard her little brother’s words and appeared behind him instantly. Mallory couldn’t help but grin about the situation. Of course it was a little bit awkward, but that was one of Mallory’s specialties. She was able to work well under awkward circumstances. This was just one of the many that she had endured. "Roman, he’s not my boyfriend. That wasn’t very polite, you should apologize, bud," Mallory said softly, grabbing him under the arm pits, swinging him out of the way and placing him beside her. Colie walked behind Mallory, scoffing, "Ro, seriously, do you think someone would date Mal?"
Mallory bit down on her bottom lip, looking behind her at her sister who was now bouncing up the stairs to get away from the anger that was building up in her. Roman glanced up at Noah and stuck his hand out. "I’m real sorry," He said in a little whiney voice. "My name is Roman, what’s yours?" Mallory giggled down at her little brother. "Atta boy, now go watch TV or something. His name is Noah," She grinned down at him, before looking up at Noah. The color flushed to her cheeks.
"Now it’s time for me to apologize. I’m so sorry about that. Colie’s not the nicest sister and Roman just turned seven, so he’s really nosey and doesn’t exactly think before he speaks." Mallory explained, nodding. "Oh, I feel terrible. I should have let you in like five minutes ago," She laughed, stepping aside and putting her arm out. "Welcome to my house! I should make you aware that there will be teenagers running around everywhere." She said with a soft chuckle. "But it’s not that bad,"

Standing at Mallory’s doorway with a bag of chocolate in his hands, worrying about how she’d react to him, he almost felt like her boyfriend. Of course, that wasn’t the case; they hadn’t even met, and even then, Noah wasn’t a very relationship-y person. Rarely did he truly like girls. He flirted with them, of course, and he was attracted to them, there was no doubt about that, but he was never really one to have lasting crushes on girls. That being said, there were the few exceptions to that pattern – he’d had a total of two girlfriends in his life, and he’d given them his everything. One had broken up with him after she’d found out he did pot, and the other had cheated on him. Perhaps that was why he was so closed off to relationships. Noah didn’t think of it that way, though. He simply saw himself as a wiser person because of those bad experiences. He wasn’t closed off, he was just… realistic.
The thought of his past relationships stretched a knot in his stomach. Gulping down the lump in his throat and shifting the candy from one hand to the other, he waited, trying to dissipate the thoughts from his mind. After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, the door opened to reveal a small, sandy-haired boy who looked around Jenny’s age. “Hi! Are you Mal’s boyfriend?” he’d asked, genuinely interested. Noah grinned, shaking his head. All thoughts of previous relationships vanished and he lowered himself to Roman’s level.
“I’m her fondue partner in crime,” he informed the boy, a toothy smile painting itself onto his features. It was then that he realized he’d been holding his Twizzler for the entire ride to Mallory’s house. He could eat it, but that would be particularly obnoxious when a young child was in his midst. Everyone knew that kids loved sugar. Hiding the Twizzler behind his back, he looked back at Roman. “I have a surprise for you, but you can’t tell Mallory when you see what I have. It’s a secret,” he insisted, checking over Roman’s shoulder to make sure Mallory was nowhere in sight. It wouldn’t matter much if Mallory knew about Mister Twizzler and his licorice-y escapades, but it would add to the magic if she wasn’t there. Pulling the Twizzler from behind his back, he used the same cartoony voice he’d used when talking to Jenny. “Hi there! I’m Mister Twizzler,” he exclaimed, moving the top of the Twizzler so it looked like the candy was waving at Roman. “I’m from Twizzlertopia. Queen Twizzle sent me here to tell you about our world. We live in a giant blue cloud way up in the sky. When it gets dark out and you go to sleep every night, we send Twizzlers down with the rain and your mummy and daddy put them in little packages and give them to you. Only very special people can know about Twizzlertopia, though, so you have to keep it a secret.”
As Mallory neared, dog in tow, Noah smiled at Roman. “Now you know. Only tell your most trusted friends,” he whispered before returning to his normal sight. As she approached him, he realized how weird this would be. She was quite short, and Noah felt like a giant standing at a mere 5’10”. He wasn’t very tall for a boy, but he felt like a monster surrounded by a tiny Mallory, a tinier Roman, and a dog. Looking down at Mallory, he smiled. Wow, she was pretty – prettier than he’d remembered. She dressed cute, too. He had to admit, he was a fan of the ensemble she’d put together. “I’m really sorry. My name is Roman, what’s yours?” Noah looked back at Roman, chuckling. “So you’re Roman. I’ve heard lots of good things about you. I’m Noah. Nice to meet you,” he introduced, laughing as the boy scampered off to watch TV. Now he realized why he loved little kids so much.
After Roman had left the main hallway, Mallory seemed to burst into a long-winded apology. He knew he shouldn’t have, yet he found himself smirking at her apology. “Hey, hey. None of this apologizing. Your siblings are wicked cool. I speak the truth,” he reassured, chuckling lightly under his breath. “You look nice, by the way. Maroon really suits you,” he added. Well, that’s a little awkward. You should probably introduce yourself. This was true – the entire situation was a little weird, and he’d just made it weirder by complimenting Mallory when he didn’t even know her. Beaming, he stuck his hand out. “Good afternoon, sir or madam. My name is Phineas Noah Scott, but you may call me Noah. I hail from my seaside abode in scenic Brighton, England. I have commandeered a plastic satchel of chocolate confectionaries for our consuming pleasure. If we happen to be creating fondue of the cheese variety, please excuse my satchel of el chocolat and we may save it for a future time. I enjoy big dogs, recreational sugar use and long walks on short bridges. Please keep your hands and feet inside the tram at all times.” [/size][/blockquote] [/size][/center] |

Mallory had taken in all the awkwardness and embraced it, feeling much better about the entire situation. She lived for those awkward situations that made you completely scared shitless, and then turns into something great. Mallory never really felt awkward. She pushed that entire aside and tried to make the other person feel as comfortable as possible. Though with Noah, it seemed like he looked pretty comfortable for how things had just went. Colie had insulted her and Roman had embarrassed her, but he hadn’t even cared. This would be a good friendship, considering her siblings pestered her 24/7. There were just so many of them. If Landon was home, he would be hovering over her like a hawk. Landon was rather protective of Adrianne, Mallory and Colie, mainly because they were his baby sister. Mallory couldn’t even begin to think of him as being her big brother lately. She hadn’t seen him in a few years and he didn’t seem to be making an attempt to see her anyway.
Then again, maybe Landon saw it how Mallory did. She hadn’t made an attempt to see him either. It wasn’t like she could just get up and walk to him. She had no idea where he was. Her mother would probably have her hung if she knew she had gone to look for him. He had promised he would come down sometime this summer, but Mallory was tired of the empty promises. They really didn’t mean anything. He’d tell her he was coming to see her or he was sending someone down to get her to bring her to him, but he’d never do anything. It made her feel like he just wanted her to be built up for the letdown. He knew what he was doing. Mallory was just a teenage girl. She didn’t understand how her brother didn’t want to be around her. Sure, sometimes she could be obnoxiously bouncy, but she could tone it down for his sake. In fact, she knew she would.
She didn’t necessarily want all of this fresh in her mind when she was going to have a good time. So Mallory shoved that all aside, flashing Noah an award winning smile. She watched Roman run off with a huge toothy grin and a Twizzler. She glanced up at Noah, chuckling. “I promise not to tell him I know about Twizzlertopia,” She whispered, teasingly. “That’s a really creative idea though. You could make a children’s book about it and sell millions.” She commented with a nod, shutting the door as Noah stepped into the cozy home. Usually, she would automatically lock it. But if she did that in front of Noah it would look like she was locking him in. She didn’t want to look like a complete nutcase the first time she hung out with him. The second time, well, that was another story.
Mallory found his introduction quite interesting. She let out a soft giggle and shook his hand. “I’m Mallory. I think you already knew that, but anyway, we are making fondue of the chocolate variety. So thank you very much for supplying us with the nice Dove chocolates,” She grinned, taking the bag from him as he offered it to her. Mallory usually just used chocolate chips, so the nice expensive Dove chocolates would be nice for a change. Now Mallory was excited to start dipping her fruit in the better chocolate than usual. It might change her whole view on fondue.
As he complimented her siblings, she laughed softly. Mallory didn’t find any of them too cool except for Adrianne and Carter and they weren’t the coolest people either. “There’s three more of them, but only two live here.” Mallory explained, shrugging. She began to walk towards the main hallway and turned at the first door on the right to enter the kitchen. She made sure that Noah had started to follow her. He complimented her on her outfit too? Score! “Really?” She asked with a soft grin. “Well thank you! I really thought I looked like a sailor. I mean, if I got one of those little blue hats with an anchor on them, I could totally pull it off, don’t you think?” She inquired with a hearty laugh. “You’re pretty cute yourself,” She said with a cheeky grin. It was true, she found Noah very attractive. He was ten times cuter than Ron Weasley.
It was odd to find pictures all over somebody’s kitchen, but Mallory’s mother was different. The walls in the huge kitchen were lined in pictures of all of the children. There was Roman’s soccer picture, Carter’s football picture, Adrianne & Mallory’s gymnastic pictures, Colie’s school picture, one of all of them together, Landon’s senior picture, and a picture of Mallory and Adrianne together in their little gymnastics leotards. There were pictures in the hallways too, but the kitchen was more dedicated to sports photos. On the refrigerator was a mural of Adrianne and Mallory’s gymnastics pictures from the time they were just four years old. She took the initiative to flip on the kitchen light so they weren’t completely in the dark.
She opened the fridge, pulling out a Glad ware container of strawberries, watermelon, honey dew melon, kiwi, pineapple, bananas, apples and grapes. It was more like a fruit salad without all of the mixed juices. Mallory had no idea what else Noah had in mind for dipping. “I don’t know what else you use, but that’s mainly what I use.” She said with a warm smile. Mallory turned on her heel and got on her tip toes, attempting to reach the top cupboard. This was going to be embarrassing.
Since the girl was so short, she would usually climb up on the counter and get the things she needed. That didn’t seem like the most lady like thing to do, but she was wearing pants, and she was pretty flexible. With that, Mallory had put her hands on the counter and shoved herself up onto it in a sitting position. She got herself to her feet, taking a few steps along the counter and ducking to avoid the oven lights. She jumped over the stove top. Nobody wanted feet on their stove. Mallory finally got to the cupboard she needed and opened it with ease, pulling out a bag of marshmallows, pretzels, and a mixture of dried fruits in a huge gallon zip lock bag.
Her balance was okay, so Mallory put one foot out and jumped from the top of the counter, landing on the wooden floor with a thump. She made her way to the kitchen table and placed the snacks on the table next to the fruit platter with an accomplished grin.
“I swear I’m not really this crazy.”

NOAH SCOTT ! [/size] seventeen, restless, quirky, independent, outgoing, the oddball - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -[/center] Noah noticed as Mallory’s shining confidence faltered for a moment. Her smile seemed to drop significantly and her eyes looked a bit distant after Roman left. His first thought was that Mallory loved Roman’s presence and was sad that he had left to go watch TV. That wouldn’t make sense, though; she’d already apologized for her siblings, including Roman. Her features had a yearning look to them, too, as if she was hoping her Prince Charming would come to the door and sweep her off her feet. Wait, what? Noah stopped for a moment, completely befuddled. Where on earth had that come from? Realization began to dawn upon him as the odd thoughts crept back into his mind. What if Mallory had a boyfriend? And what if he was coming over here at this very instant? She wouldn’t invite him over if she did, would she?
Then he recalled her siblings’ words. “Who would like Mal?”, one of them had said. To this, Noah had smiled. Mallory seemed like a great girl already. She was sweet and open, and pretty easy on the eyes to boot. He could easily see lots of boys liking her. That was why he was so confused as to why she’d invited him here – wouldn’t some random guy making fondue with Mallory piss her boyfriend off? “How’s a pretty girl like you not have a man on her arm?” he inadvertently asked as he tagged along with Mallory. Many people would mentally face-palm themselves for such a stupid question; Noah took this opportunity to literally face-palm himself. Thank the Lord. At least he was behind Mallory, so she couldn’t see him slapping his forehead. That would, no doubt, make him look even lamer than he probably looked. Oh well.
His thoughts of Mallory’s boyfriend quickly tapered off as she brought up Twizzlertopia. For a seventeen-year-old, Noah had a horrible attention span. Any other person would keep the thoughts in the back of their mind and contemplate them after addressing the other person. No, not Noah. He seemed to completely forget about them and his eyes widened in surprise. “Twizzlertopia? My dear lady, I do not know what you are talking about,” he responded, a mockingly baffled expression coloring his features. With that, he gave her a nudge and a wink. As she continued and confirmed that they were indeed making chocolate fondue, Noah grinned. “Pleased to meet your acquaintance, Her Majesty Mallory of Fox Chapel. Well, then, I suppose it is quite fitting that I commandeered a plastic satchel of confectionaries. I do not think she-who-is-my-mother will be very pleased by their disappearance, though. She prefers confectionaries of the Dove variety. Alas, I will galvanize the troops and set off on a quest to the almighty CVS after our fondue of the chocolate variety has been created, hitherto and henceforth.”
It was a bit pathetic how well he could speak like a complete idiot. He didn’t even have to think about it, too; speaking like a Shakespearian vagabond came naturally to him. In fact, he hadn’t the slightest clue what ‘hitherto and henceforth’ meant, nor did he know if he was using the phrase in the correct context. Though English had always been his worst subject, he had a talent for bullshitting. Going on a quest to the almighty CVS, hitherto and henceforth? It was completely plausible. Anyone who doubted its validity was just absurd.
Alas, his mind had trailed off, and his thoughts wandered back into their current conversation only as Mallory began to talk about sailors. Sailors? What the heck? Sailors like Sailor Moon? She wasn’t even cool. It was all about Sailor Mars. Girl got it goin’ on. Then he realized she was talking about herself. Glancing down at her outfit, he smirked. She did have a point. If she wanted, she could look like a sailor. “Lieutenant Commander Mallory. It has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?” he asked, grinning. He thought it did. Shuffling alongside her, he chuckled when she complimented him. “Well, thank you,” he offered, a soft red tinting his cheeks. As much as he flirted with girls, he was never good with taking compliments. He wasn’t sure anyone was, though.
As they entered the kitchen, Noah’s eyes widened slightly. “Wow. Lots of pictures,” he noted, taking a moment to examine a few of them closely. There were a few of each of the siblings, and lots of Mallory in leotards or doing gymnastics. He was surprised at how good she was at such a young age. Anyone could tell by looking at the pictures that she had a gift for it. She was a pretty cute little kid, too. “You must be really good,” he commented, slowly making his way toward her as he examined each of the pictures closely. The family’s love for each other brought a smile to his face. He’d always wished he had a big family; his extended family was a decent size, but having a big immediate family had always seemed so cool. Perhaps that was just because he’d grown up watching shows like Full House and the Cosby Show. Even then, he’d seen Cheaper by the Dozen a few years ago and it had rocked his world. There was nothing in the world he wanted more than having fifteen thousand siblings to help prepare a grilled cheese sandwich for school.
Turning back to Mallory, he raised a brow as he saw her climb atop the kitchen counter. Well, that was a little weird. Weird, but cool. His eyes followed her as she hopped from place to place, jumping over the stove top at one point. The rational part of him wanted to follow her every move she made in case she tripped and fell. His upper body strength was alright, and he was pretty confident that he could catch her if he fell. He didn’t feel like it was necessary to follow her, though. She executed each move with such grace and agility that he simply found himself watching her in awe rather than concern. As she grabbed a Zip-Loc bag and hopped down from the counter, Noah smirked.
“I’ve never made fondue before, actually,” he answered in regards to her previous statement, still a little bewildered. “And, you know, I would have gladly gotten those for you,” he added, grinning and raising his arm to demonstrate how easily it would have been for him to reach the top shelf. Lowering his arm, he clapped a bit and chuckled. “Bravo, though. You have successfully earned ten more cool points for being able to do that without the aid of, well, anything.” [/size][/blockquote] [/size][/center] |

Prince charming would be nice, but Mallory wasn’t quite sure what she would do with a boy. She had seen boyfriends and girlfriends on television and of course her parents, but she hadn’t actually had any experience at all. That would make her seem like even more of a freak. She had one boyfriend, and she just felt completely uncomfortable with him. Mallory didn’t care what people thought about her, so whenever she would act like a complete and total nutcase in front of the boy, he would give her odd looks. Mallory hadn’t even kissed the boy. Needless to say, she was not in love with him and it was probably the most awkward month of her life. Mallory wanted a prince charming, but she didn’t know where to find him or how to find him… or how to act around him for that matter.
It was probably one of her main secrets that she’d never been kissed before. It made her ashamed of herself. It wasn’t like she didn’t think she was pretty enough or good enough to be kissed, because she did. Mallory just hadn’t found the right boy yet. She wanted it to be magnificent. She wanted to be in a boy’s arms and not have him expecting it and then just lean forward and kiss him. It would be amazing, she had decided. Now all she needed to do was find the boy to share her amazing moment with. She wasn’t a good girl, just a little bit skeptical. She’d try anything once, but she wasn’t about to throw herself at the next guy that came around. Mallory would gladly flirt with somebody if they were flirting with her, but that’s about it.
Mallory found it strange how he asked how she couldn’t have a boyfriend, just as she had the situation on her mind. She shrugged, biting down on her bottom lip. “The only real reason is because I’m a complete and total spaz and some boys just can’t handle that.” Mallory declared with a soft laugh. She figured it was true; not that boys couldn’t handle it, but that they didn’t want to handle it. She was always happy and willing to try new things, where as most boys just wanted to relax and make out. Mallory was not about that. Her body wasn’t going to be saved for marriage, but she wasn’t going to jump the next hot boy that wanted to get inside her pants. Then again, Mallory wasn’t all that sure if any boys wanted in her pants.
She really was impressed with the whole idea of Twizzlertopia. She knew that she could never make something like that up. If Noah checked with the Twizzler trademark, she was pretty sure he could write a book, make a movie, and make kids all over the world happy. The Twizzler Company could probably profit off of this idea too. Mallory suddenly wanted a Twizzler. She wondered how they would taste in fondue. Too bad she didn’t have any with her. That would be pretty epic. The strawberries would have to do. After all, it would probably taste better with the real thing rather than a gummy fake strawberry.
“I’ll buy your mother some more Dove chocolate. I don’t blame her for liking it better. Tell her that I apologize for using her amazing Dove milk chocolates for some fondue-y goodness.” She stated, beaming. Mallory loved it when she could act like a complete fool and not have anybody mind it. She was sure that she and Noah were going to be very good friends. He didn’t seem to be a judgmental person at all, which was something she favored in a guy. It made her feel like she could be her complete self and he wouldn’t even care. That was another thing she liked in a guy. Originality was nice too.
She noticed the color flood to his cheeks and she grinned over at him. It was cute how some boys got embarrassed when a girl pointed out how obviously attractive they were. He didn’t look like Ron Weasley like she had thought before. Mallory bit down on her bottom lip when he said she must be really good at gymnastics. It was Mallory’s turn to blush. She didn’t think she was amazing at it. There was almost always room for improvement. “I’m alright I guess,” She said with a shrug. Mallory knew she was better than alright, but she was a very modest girl and she intended to stay that way.
The boy had never made fondue?! Mallory’s jaw dropped and she turned to face Noah. She closed her mouth and then raised a brow. “You have got to be shitting me.” The girl said with a soft laugh. “How can you say that!?” She asked, falling to her knees and plugging in the machine. Mallory hadn’t even thought to do that. It would probably be a good idea considering she was ready to stuff her face. She pulled herself to her feet. “You’re a fondue virgin.” Mallory mumbled under her breath, just loud enough for him to hear. “I’ll fix that.” The girl teased, slicking a hand through her hair. She took the bag of chocolate, opening it with no struggle, and dumped it into the bottom of the fondue fountain.
Mallory turned on her heels, making her way to the cupboard to get out the stick for the fruit and whatnot. She set them on the table, staring at the machine for a minute before turning to Noah. “I always climb on the counters. My brother, Carter, says it was because I was born a monkey but they fixed it so I looked like a human.” She said with a shrug. “He’s a little nutcase.” She explained, giving Noah a soft smile. She watched the chocolate melt slowly, then took one of the sticks and stabbed a piece of pineapple.
She twirled the piece of fruit slowly and precisely, watching the chocolate trickle all over the yellow fruit. It was probably the only time Mallory didn’t have a widespread grin on her face, only because she was concentrating on getting chocolate all over the pineapple and not anywhere else. Mallory absolutely hated it when the chocolate dripped or got on the stick. It was probably one of her biggest pet peeves. Her concentration wasn’t broken until she was sure the pineapple was completely covered. With that, the petite girl put the piece of fruit in her mouth, munching on it slowly. This was the life.

NOAH SCOTT ! [/size] seventeen, restless, quirky, independent, outgoing, the oddball - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -[/center] If Noah had known about Mallory’s secret, he wouldn’t have teased her about it or have been rude about it. In fact, he’d probably think it was cute. Noah was one of the few nice guys in school who appreciated the good things about a girl. He’d rather have an innocent girl like Mallory who was good-hearted and unique than some girl who’d been around the block a million times. If anything, Mallory was already a hundred times more attractive than most of the girls at Stewart for the simple reason that she respected herself. She seemed grounded in whom she was and she knew what she deserved. A lot of the girls he knew at Stewart had all the money in the world and bought themselves a plethora of short skirts and low-cut tops to please the male population at Stewart. It amazed him how many skanky girls there were at such a prestigious school. Noah wouldn’t trust a hoe, though. He’d never trust a hoe because a hoe wouldn’t trust him.
Noah frowned slightly when Mallory gave her reasoning. For once, the thoughts in his head slowed down significantly and he lowered his voice. “You’re not a spaz,” he commented softly, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “You’re unique. And boys who can’t handle your uniqueness don’t deserve to have you,” he insisted, smiling. It was true. He’d just met her, but he already knew Mallory was too great of a girl to be wasted on some jerk who couldn’t love every side of her. “And, if it’s any consolation, I like your personality. It’s endearing.” And that it was; honestly, Noah couldn’t see why guys would have a problem with Mallory. She was so… fun. She was easy to be around and she knew how to have a good time. What was wrong with that?
He laughed when she offered to buy his mother new chocolate. “Don’t even worry about it. She’s a pretty cool mum. And if I tell her I used it to make a new friend, she won’t care. She’ll make me take my sister to the park or something, though. Or take her to tae kwon do. It’s kind of pathetic that my little sister can kick my ass and she’s only six bloody years old,” he commented, chuckling. His mom usually wasn’t too nitpicky if Noah took something of hers, but if something needed to be done that she didn’t want to do, she’d make Noah do it. Her excuse was always that he took her things without notice, so he would have to do things without notice too. It was a weird relationship, but Noah didn’t really mind it. Julie usually made him do things with his sister, who he was fond of anyway. “It’s a good system. Kind of like NutriSystem, but without all the already skinny people who lose like forty pounds and look like twigs at the end.”
If possible, Noah began to blush more when Mallory smiled at him. Oh, how he hated having pale skin when he got embarrassed. He literally turned into a tomato. It wasn’t even Mallory’s comment that was causing him to blush now; it was just that she had turned and acknowledged his blushing. How awkward was that? Very awkward. He felt a little better when she blushed in response to his compliment. As his normal color returned to his cheeks, Noah smiled. “Well, you’re a heck of a lot better than I would ever be at gymnastics. I’m pretty horrible athletically in every area,” he admitted, smirking. He’d never been a fan of PE.
He couldn’t help but let out a laugh at Mallory’s next comment. Gosh, this girl was funny. “Yes, I am a fondue virgin,” he admitted, still chuckling lightly. He was a virgin in another area, too… but he obviously wasn’t going to admit that now. ”Hi, I’m Noah Scott. I’m the suave Brit heartthrob who makes the girls go wild. And oh, yeah, I’ve never gotten laid.” What an awesome conversation starter that would be. He watched as she plugged in the appliance and got out the necessary items needed for the perfect fondue. Feeling a bit awkward, Noah added in, “I don’t really know what we’re supposed to do to make fondue, but I feel bad just standing here while you do everything. So please tell me if I can help.” Oh, Noah. So polite.
“I always climb on the counters.” Noah grinned, folding his hands over his chest. “You and my sister would get along swimmingly. You should meet her sometime. She absolutely loves climbing on the countertops. The world is pretty much her playground,” he said. Recounting the incident that had happened moments before he’d arrived at Mallory’s, he added, “She was actually trying to climb on the countertops before I came here. I caught her just in time. She’s not very tall – I mean, she’s six, and six-year-olds can only be so tall – and she wanted a Twizzler. We keep a big jar of them on the counter. I don’t know why, I guess my family just really likes them. Anyways, she wanted one, and she had put all these things on top of each other to hoist herself up on to get to the Twizzlers. There were cardboard boxes and Lucky Charms boxes and whatnot all piled up on top of each other. You should teach her some of your tricks.”
Her next few moments confused Noah a bit. He watched her carefully as she quieted down and stared intently at the piece of pineapple rotating in the fondue. Well, that was kind of weird. A little OCD, actually. Watching her eyes, he noticed she didn’t blink once while twirling the piece of fruit. Without thinking, he frowned slightly and ambled over to her. Gently resting his hands on her shoulders, he lowered his voice to a softer, less… spastic tone. “Why so serious?” he asked, smiling halfway into the question. Slowly moving his fingers in circles around her shoulders, he raised a brow. “You know, you have a lot of tension in your muscles,” he commented in a quietly concerned tone. “That’s odd for a gymnast. Just…” Searching for the right word, he continued with the massage and finished with, “… relax.” Smiling, he eased off the pressure on her shoulders and turned her around as gently as possible. “Fondue should be happy, not tense. It should be spontaneous, like… like Superbad.” Wait, WHAT? How is Superbad spontaneous? Sigh. Roll with the punches, kid. Roll with the punches. Moving his arm around her side, he dipped a finger in the fondue and drew whiskers on her cheeks. “There. Adorable. The Asian kid was the best part of Superbad, anyway,” he concluded, hissing like a tiger and holding up his hands as if they were paws. [/size][/blockquote] [/size][/center] |

Mallory had quite a few secrets. It wasn’t just that she’d never shared a kiss with a boy. The resentment towards her brother was probably one of her biggest secrets. She wasn’t about to call her brother and tell him how her opinion of him had changed so much when he fled from the stress. Mallory had always wondered how life would be if she would have gone with him. Landon had offered quite a few times once he had left the house to come back and get her, but she protested. Her excuse was that she wanted to nurse her mother back to health. As much as Mallory hated to admit it, she was probably the one in the family who was the most passionate about restoring her mother’s health. She never left her mother’s side.
There were some nights she would never forget. Most nights, Mallory had slept in her mother’s bed with her. It was a lot easier than sleeping in her room and having her mother use the little strength that she had left to try to wake her up without getting out of bed. She remembered rubbing her mother’s back soothingly when she was sick from the chemo, brushing the little hair she had before it all fell out, holding her hand when the pain was too terrible to endure alone, and when things had gotten really bad, she could remember using the eye dropper to put small drops of water in the back of Lauren’s throat to keep her the slightest bit hydrated.
But the easiest thing to remember was the grip of her mother’s hand. Lauren had thought she was holding Mallory’s hand as tight as she could, but it wasn’t as tight as she had thought. Mallory remembered when she felt her mother’s grip loosen and her hand drop from hers. She remembered when the life drained from her mother right before her eyes. Her mother hadn’t died, but her personality had. Mallory remembered jumping to her feet to find a phone when she thought her mother was in her last few seconds. Of course, they brought her back, but it was the most painful memory she had. No one tried to explain to Mallory what had happened. She thought she had already known.
Of course, her mother didn’t die. It was a real blessing that she didn’t. Mallory had no idea how she would be the girl she was today without her mother. She didn’t know how some people lived without them. Mallory knew she needed her mother. When she got her first bra, the first time she got her period, and her first boyfriend. She knew she could not have done any of that without a mother. Her father would have taken her mother’s place, and that would have been a very awkward experience. She tried to keep those memories far from her, but they were her secrets. She wouldn’t dare tell a soul about the emotional pain she went through when her mother was ill.
She was ripped from her thoughts when Noah placed a hand on her shoulder. “You’re not a spaz.” A soft smile appeared on Mallory’s face, and she turned her head to face Noah. She had been called a spaz all of her life. It was nice to hear somebody say the polar opposite. Her smile widened when he told her that boys didn’t deserve her if they couldn’t handle her. Mallory had always believed that, but when fewer and fewer boys wanted to hang out with a happy girl, she began to wonder. She always figured that boys went after the sad and upset girls because they were easier to take advantage of. Mallory, on the other hand, would not stand for being taken advantage of. She’d put her foot down and pull herself out of it.
“Thanks,” Mallory said with another smile. “I like yours a lot too.” She slicked a hand through her bangs like Shailene Woodley always does, then let her hands fall back down to her sides. She nodded at the explanation of his relationship with his mother. At least he had a decent relationship with her. “I’m really close to my mommy.” Mallory admitted with another nod and a soft laugh. “She and I get along really well. She’s more like my best friend than my mother. We go shopping and out to lunch like the stuff you see on television.” Mallory laughed when he told her about Jenny. “My brother does that when he wants to get my mom’s keys. He doesn’t like to go to our grandmother’s, mainly because she sleeps the whole time and it’s really boring. So whenever we want to go, my mom hides the keys on top of the refrigerator and Roman stacks stuff on top of each other to try to get to them. He’s only succeeded once though.” She chuckled.
As it got quiet, Mallory was going to stab another piece of fruit and drown it in the chocolaty goodness. Much to her surprise, she felt hands on her shoulders again. She had no idea why she was being the least bit serious today. The goal was to have fun, not to make somebody feel completely uncomfortable. Suddenly, Mallory felt bad, wondering if she had made him feel awkward. When he started the massage, she gave him a soft laugh. “I haven’t gone to gymnastics in about a day. It’s probably why I’m so tense. I have to go practice some tonight.” She nodded. When he turned her around, she smiled up at him since he was considerably taller than her.
“Spontaneity is good.” Mallory grinned, giving him another smile. She was beginning to forget about Landon and the bad memories with her mother and focusing on Noah. When he gave her whiskers, she bit down on her bottom lip and swiped her on finger through the chocolate. First, she put a dot on his nose, then three little dots on each cheek. “Now, you’re catface!” She exclaimed, taking one of the napkins and wiping her hands off.
Speaking of spontaneity, Mallory turned to the side, hitting the play button on the iHome. One of her mother’s softer songs began to play, and she grinned again. “Have you ever shared a dance with a young gal, Mister Scott?” She questioned, taking his hands and placing them on her hips. Mallory wanted to laugh at her attempts to be suave, but she realized that doing so would make the situation all the more awkward. She hooked her arms around his neck and began to sway. Mallory realized she was practically on her tip toes since he was so much taller than her, but now she didn’t really care.
How’s that for spontaneous?

She seemed to do that a lot. Was he doing something wrong? Perhaps he was coming on too strong. But that couldn’t be the case; he didn’t think he was coming on too strong in any way. He was just being nice. He was easing the tension from the situation. He was making Mallory look like the Asian from Superbad. That was just Noah being Noah. He couldn’t help that he was a kid at heart and enjoyed making situations as playful and fun as possible. What was more fun than fondue, Asians, and cat whiskers? Nothing, that was for sure.
His concern faded as the smile returned to Mallory’s face. As she ran her hand through her bangs, Noah smirked. “You know, the girl from that show on ABC Family reminds me a lot of you. She does that, too,” he remarked, quieting down as he listened to her stories about her mother. He smiled, imagining Mallory and her mother going out to lunch and going shopping together. “That sounds fun,” he commented, nodding. It did sound fun, especially since Noah had never had that kind of experience with his mother (or father, for that matter). He and his parents had a decent relationship, though the majority of the time, Noah couldn’t connect with his parents very well. His mother, Julie, was a preschool teacher, so she was much better with younger kids. Maybe that was why she got along with Jenny so well. She was also a lot more sensitive than a woman her age was supposed to be; she cried at the littlest things and she refused to engage in deep discussions with Noah. When he wanted to talk about politics or war, his mother would always shy away from the conversation, conveniently disregarding the fact that people shared different viewpoints on everything.
While everything in Julie’s world was happy and full of rainbows, Noah’s father’s world was the opposite. Kent, a lawyer who’d been in his field for more than twenty years, would constantly try to defeat Noah in any type of argument. Whether it was talking about the war in Iraq or who was supposed to get the car washed, Kent made it his priority to win every time. At first, Noah had guessed that it was because he was a father and he felt the need to assert himself and teach his children a lesson. Later on he’d realized that Kent considered his home life to be exactly the same as his work life; he’d argue, argue, argue till he couldn’t argue anymore. He didn’t like to accept Noah’s ideas, and he didn’t like new ideas in general. In Kent’s world, everything had a process and a law, and those could always be followed.
Still, Noah couldn’t say his family life was too bad. Underneath it all, Kent and Julie genuinely cared about Noah and Jenny. They listened when one had problems, or they gave advice when the other was stuck between a rock and a hard place. All in all, he couldn’t complain. They lived comfortably and seemed to be the quintessential “normal” family – they had their fights, but on the whole, they dealt with each other. Noah listened as Mallory explained her brother’s habit of climbing on the countertops too. “My brother does that when he wants to get my mom’s keys. He doesn’t like to go to our grandmother’s, mainly because she sleeps the whole time and it’s really boring. He listened to her excuse for the tension, chuckling to himself lightly. The excuse was so… lame. Her not practicing her gymnastics was a semi-plausible excuse, but really, how tense could one be from not practicing a day? “It’s that and something else,” he added in a gentler tone, smiling down at her. He left the statement open, though. Noah knew that prying wasn’t the way to help someone and if something serious had affected Mallory that caused her to be tense, he wouldn’t want her to freak out if he noticed. They seemed to be getting along fine already; he didn’t want to mess up by pushing her into saying things she didn’t want to say.
Noah watched as Mallory swiped her finger through the fondue, wondering what she’d do with it. And then she poked his nose. What the heck? That was pretty lame. What was he supposed to be, Noah the fondue-nosed reindeer? He was about to protest when she drew more on his cheeks, and then exclaimed that he was Catface. Grinning, he furrowed his brow in mock anger. “We cats are nut to be lul’d at!” he exclaimed, shaking his head slightly. He was pretty surprised Mallory even knew about Catface.
As she moved his hands from her shoulders to her hips, Noah found himself blushing again. It wasn’t that he was embarrassed to be dancing with Mallory, because he wasn’t; in fact, if he’d met Mallory before he’d met Kelsey, he’d probably be overjoyed. The fact of the matter was that he hadn’t, and that pained him. Noah had approached every girl after Kelsey with a million guards up around his heart, sentinels ready to attack and flee at a moment’s notice. He hadn’t hated girls after Kelsey, he’d just… kept his distance from them. She’d taught him that attachment, up till a certain point, was bad. Dancing with Mallory would have been fun had it not been for her.
The thought of Kelsey caused Noah’s grin to drop slightly. He was the second girlfriend he’d ever had. After Christine, who’d explained that she couldn’t date someone who smoked pot, Noah had been only slightly closed off to relationships. And then Kelsey had come around. He could still remember the first day he’d met her, the first time he’d seen the beautiful smile that lit up his world. He loved everything about her, from her long, mousey brown hair to her soft blue eyes. She was the first serious relationship he’d ever been in. She was the first person who seemed to like everything about him. She’d light up with him, she’d act like an idiot in public with him, she knew just how to act in every situation. She was the perfect girlfriend.
And then she’d gone and cheated on him. The day he’d seen Kelsey cheating on him was the day Noah had experienced his emotions in full swing. The mixture of heartbreak, anger and confusion that had consumed him that night was unmatched. The worst thing about it was that he’d caught her in the act. He’d never thought he could yell that loud, turn that red, and feel that much anger bubble into his blood – yet it had. He’d held himself back from physically hurting someone in the process. That same control couldn’t be said for his words, though; he’d called her every name in the book and then some. After their confrontation, he’d gone home and ripped up everything that reminded him of her. All the cute pictures they’d taken together, every letter she’d written him, anything that brought back her memory. He’d sat in his room, brooding, for what seemed like years. Even Jenny was concerned when Noah wouldn’t come out of his room for hours on his end, save for mealtimes and when he had to use the restroom. Time seemed to stand still from that point on.
Somewhere between that fateful day and the present, Noah had partially healed himself. He’d learned to move on after he saw Kelsey walking the halls with a new boy on her arm every week. He’d realized that she would have cheated on him no matter how much he loved her or how much he gave her. And so life went on for Noah Scott; he continued to play with his sister, continued to make new friends, and continued to live his life. His love life had never been the same, though. Noah had broken up with Kelsey when he was sixteen; now he was nearing eighteen and hadn’t had a relationship since. It wasn’t that Noah didn’t like girls – he did, there was no questioning that – he’d just found it increasingly difficult to maintain steady interests in certain girls for longer periods of time. Crushes were harder to come by and lasting ones were few to none in Noah’s world.
Flirting was a beautiful thing to Mister Scott. It meant controlling another person for a period of time through attraction, even if that time was short. Noah liked being able to do that. He loved being loved and would easily admit it. He loved the attention that poured down on him when he flirted with the opposite sex. The best thing was, there were no strings attached with flirting. Noah could flirt and flirt and flirt and nothing bad would come of it unless things were taken to another level. He’d made sure things stayed on the attraction level and nothing more between every girl he’d encountered after Kelsey. There was no way in hell he was going to be taken advantage of like that again.
In many ways, Noah was the perfect boy to many girls – he was handsome, charming, and he genuinely cared about what someone had to say. He was loyal and endearing, and he liked to talk things out. In the end, though, Noah was only a boy, and boys let pride take control of their lives easily. Noah was too proud to admit to anyone that he’d been hurt by Kelsey. He was too proud to admit that he was still vulnerable, and that at any moment, his heart could be taken away from him again. So he put walls up, just like every other person in the world, and he’d keep them up as long as it meant he looked stable. The girl on America’s Next Top Model had put it nicely when she stated that “looks ken be decievin’.” Noah’s front of being calm and collected had been accepted by pretty much any girl he’d encountered.
The memories were still there, though, painful and etching reminders into his mind whenever they got the chance to. This moment was one of them, and Noah’s extremities had seemed to go limp as he remembered Kelsey for the first time in forever. The feeling of his hands on a girl’s waist brought back the memory of the last time Noah and Kelsey had ever danced together – it was during his sophomore year homecoming, and they’d been the last couple on the dance floor. He’d held her as tightly as he could and never wanted to let her go. Everything was perfect, right down to the very last kiss they’d shared as the song had ended.
The feeling was all too familiar, and as Noah was slowly brought back to reality, his grip on Mallory tightened instinctively. He didn’t know whether it was out of anger, or sadness, or attraction. He had no idea whether or not to let himself go and dance with her like he’d danced with Kelsey, or whether he could stop himself before they actually started dancing. She’ll ask questions if you don’t dance with her, Noah thought to himself, still perplexed by the issue at hand and the ones plaguing his mind. Rough it out, bud.
Looking down, Noah realized she was standing on her tiptoes to reach him. This, coupled with his loose grip, seemed to be a recipe for disaster. It was then that he realized how easily she could fall, or trip and get hurt. As reluctant as he was to dance with Mallory, he wouldn’t want to see her injure herself just because he was too much of a tightwad to make sure she was alright. Gently pulling her up, he was slightly surprised to see how light she really was. He put her down on top of his feet and wrapped his arms around her waist again, holding her within a relaxed but stable grasp. Smiling down on her, he began to sway with the music. “I hope you don’t mind me doing that,” he started, nodding down toward their feet. “You’re a little on the short side, though, and you looked like you were having a little trouble reaching my height,” he commented with a smile. “This way, you’re safe and we’re still dancing.” [/size][/blockquote] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - status complete

Noah’s comment made Mallory smile. She knew the exact actress he was talking about now. It was that Shailene Woodley girl that played the pregnant teenager in the show ‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’. Of course, there was one difference. Mallory didn’t have a pregnant stomach. At least, she hoped she didn’t have a pregnant stomach. That would be embarrassing, considering she was just inches from Noah. She had always wondered if she could beat the shit out of people with her stomach when she was pregnant. It would be a great cartoon. The pregnant superhero would waddle from town to town beating people with her stomach. Mallory almost wanted to start laughing at her idea, but she figured if she started laughing that either Noah would think he was doing something wrong or think she was flat out crazy. Either way, she figured she’d better keep her mouth shut.
Mallory’s mother was quite the opposite of Julie. She got along with the older kids much better. It was mainly because she was so much closer to them. They helped nurse her back to health and keep her there. She loved Roman with all of her heart, but much like Mallory, he got to her. She had a low patience level and she passed that onto almost all of the children besides Mallory. She had a pretty high tolerance level but could get catty at times if she was pushed far enough. Mallory wasn’t a naturally irritable person. It happened when somebody got on her nerves for a long period of time. She fancied being a babysitter and not a mother, mainly because then she didn’t have to deal with the kid 24/7. She always wondered how somebody could do that.
She knew if she was her mother she would have wanted to toss herself into a closet quite a few times. Mallory was a very bouncy and energetic child when she was younger, not to say she wasn’t now. It was much different back then. People thought that she was severely ADHD because of how bouncy she was. It was normal for her feet not to touch the floor because she was obsessed with playing the game where the floor was lava or a river instead of the floor. She would bounce from chair to couch to table and then get on the end table in the hall way leading to the kitchen. Mallory remembered how many times she’d get in trouble for flipping in the kitchen. She used to throw back hand springs off of the kitchen table and onto the counter just to show up in front of people. She was pretty sure if she tried it now she’d break the table. Mallory wasn’t five years old anymore.
Her eyes met Noah as she looked up at him, still on her toes. It didn’t hurt since she had to be on her toes for the balance beam at times, but she wouldn’t be swaying on her toes for hours on end. He could tell that something else was bothering her? She bit down on her bottom lip, trying to decide what to do. Mallory was not a liar. She didn’t tell lies and she didn’t believe them either. Then again, she wasn’t the most open person either. She wasn’t about to pour her entire life story into Noah’s hands and let him piece it together. He’d probably find her to be an attention hog if she let everything out. It wasn’t that she had trust issues. She wasn’t going to add herself to the list of teenagers who said that that weren’t actually true. She just hadn’t found a reason to completely trust Noah yet. He didn’t seem like the kind of person that would go spread her shit around school, but she was still going to be cautious and choose the latter. It wasn’t like she was lying to him. Mallory was simply covering up the truth.
She gave him a shrug, looking down at her feet then back up at him. “It’s not a big deal, really. I just got caught up in something I was thinking about,” Mallory explained, giving him a reassuring smile and a nod. She felt bad for stretching the truth, but she didn’t want the attention. In fact, nobody knew about Landon that was outside of her family. They knew he existed, but nobody really knew the entire story. She sometimes wanted to let it out on somebody. Not for the attention, but to see if somebody could relate to the feeling of abandonment. Mallory refused to let it eat at her, but lately she’d found herself crying about it. She’d never actually felt abandonment. All of her family members had been there for her when she needed her. She was too young to understand and now that she had grown up, she felt it. She felt like she had done something wrong and pushed the boy away.
Mallory remembered when he called her the other day. He hadn’t talked to her on the phone in the longest time. The sound of his voice left her speechless. He had grown up even more and it had gotten deeper. Of course it was shocking. She remembered Landon as being the boy who used to play catch with her in the backyard, go swimming with her on hot days, play in the sprinkler and spot her with gymnastics. She had remembered the day he left. His explanation was that he was going to relieve some stress. Mallory didn’t understand. She knew that there was chaos and stress in the house, but she thought she was doing a good job of taking care of it. Adrianne was far too afraid to try to take the load on her shoulders and her father tended to shy away from the difficult situations. The next in line was Mallory, and she remembered all the stress. It was gone now. Why couldn’t he come back?
She could hear his voice telling her he loved her and missed her. He hadn’t apologized once for leaving her to deal with everything by herself. It was the only thing she wanted. Mallory would welcome the boy back with open arms. She’d make his bed every day, cook him breakfast and clean his room. She knew it was probably the wrong thing to do, but she’d take care of him like she took care of her mother. Mallory would keep him as happy as possible and never let a frown touch his lips. She wanted her brother back in her life. She wanted the male role model that would protect her from anything. She had her father, sure, but it wasn’t like Landon. Landon was more than a protector.
Again, Mallory was pulled from her thoughts when Noah’s grip tightened. She jumped slightly, looking up at him and then chuckling lightly. “You okay?” She questioned, wondering what it meant. Mallory hadn’t really been paying attention. She was lost in her own thoughts which she felt absolutely terrible about. Now she wished she had been paying more attention so she knew why he had held her tighter. Mallory definitely didn’t mind. It had been awhile since she had male attention and it was something that she missed a lot.
Suddenly she felt bad for letting her mind wander, so she began to ramble. “I promise there’s nothing bothering me,” Which was true now, considering she had gotten her mind off of Landon. “Why would something bother me? I’ve got chocolate, fruit, and I’m dancing with a really sweet guy…” She trailed off, giving him a soft smile. “I’m happy.” Mallory finished, looking down at her feet again, then back up at him. She hoped she hadn’t sent a wrong signal. Mallory really hoped it was the right signal.
Mallory felt her feet lift from the ground, and then she was on top of his feet. She was hoping she wasn’t completely crushing his feet. It wasn’t like she was tiny or anything. She repositioned her arms around his neck, getting a little closer to him. “Are you sure my lard ass isn’t crushing your feet?” She asked, raising a brow and trying to keep a straight face. Mallory honestly didn’t think that low of herself. She thought rather highly of herself. She didn’t think too highly of herself, just high enough to keep her self-esteem regulated.

NOAH SCOTT ! [/size] seventeen, restless, quirky, independent, outgoing, the oddball - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -[/center] “It’s not a big deal, really. I just got caught up in something I was thinking about.” Noah frowned slightly, visibly upset by her response. God, did he hate when people did it. How hard was it just to admit something was wrong? Well, asking that question would make Noah a total hypocrite. If he asked about why he’d zoned out, he wouldn’t be able to give her a straight answer. As far as he was concerned, if Kelsey was still in Brighton, his secret would stay there. He didn’t want it to travel the Atlantic Ocean and find its way to Mallory. Sweet, innocent, pretty Mallory, who was in his arms right now, completely vulnerable and at the same time still defending those walls she’d raised. In some ways, she reminded him a lot of himself; with a nugget of worry lodged deep within and a million guards at the ready around the heart. Then again, that could be said about anyone; after all, everyone had a secret.
There was just something about Mallory, though. Perhaps it was her bright, engaging eyes, or her wide, toothy grin that had him hooked. And then there was the cute hair flip she did when she seemed to be nervous. Noah found that adorable. God, stop it. This is how Kelsey got you hooked. Don’t let her be Kelsey, he thought to himself. Stopping for a moment, he forced himself not to think of Kelsey and bring his attention back to Mallory. The memories of Kelsey were bad enough; bringing them up for the second time today would not be the way to eliminate the tension between him and Mallory.
He couldn’t judge her for not opening up to him, though; a lot of people forgot that, when someone was upset, they were still humans, defensive and stubborn by nature. They’d keep their secret theirs until the apocalypse. At least, that’s what Noah had observed; everyone he’d ever met had some guard up. He could understand Mallory not telling him her secret. “Oh,” he stated, the word coming out as more of a starter than an expression of surprise. “Well, if something’s bothering you, you can tell me,” he assured her, smiling down at the girl. Gently releasing one of his hands from her waist, he unhooked one of her hands and wrapped their pinkies together. “Pinky promise,” he added, grinning.
And then it was awkward. Well, maybe he was just making it awkward. Any other person would have simply released her hand and gone back to dancing. No, not Noah. He stared down at their hands for a moment, completely oblivious as to what was the appropriate thing to do. Looking down at her hand, he found the smile creeping back onto his features; she was wearing a very pretty reddish shade of nail polish to match her shirt. He could almost picture her sitting in her room, painstakingly coating each nail with exactly the right amount of polish. That’s what it looked like, at least, and he had to commend her on it. If he was a girl, he’d fail at painting nails.
Noah’s hand had inadvertently closed around hers and he’d moved a little closer to Mallory. He wanted her to know that he was trustworthy, and that he was there for her. He’d found a good way to reinforce that was to physically remain close with the person. That way, they could feel the other person’s presence as well as their emotional support. It was a nice tactic. Gently intertwining their fingers, Noah exhaled. The memories of Kelsey were beginning to fade away slowly. They were replaced by Mallory’s hand in his, warm and soft to the touch. For a split second, he wondered if she used hand cream. Did he smell the faint aroma of perfume? Was that a ladybug on the counter?
Indeed it was a ladybug. For a guy as suave as Noah, he had the worst attention span. As with the squirrel in his bedroom, he felt the desire to talk to this mirthful woodland creature. It wasn’t actually a ‘woodland creature’, per se; but Noah liked to identify every animal as one, no matter if it was a lion or a ladybug. Restraining his two-year-old nature, he simply smiled down at the ladybug and returned his attention to Mallory. When she asked if he was alright, he looked down, almost confused. “Hmm?” he questioned, having been distracted by Kelsey – and the ladybug – moments prior. Realizing he’d entered a daze almost identical to Mallory’s, Noah felt the uneasiness creeping over him again. “Just caught up in something I was thinking about,” he insisted, not realizing he’d used Mallory’s words word-for-word. Great minds think alike.
“Why would something bother me? I’ve got chocolate, fruit, and I’m dancing with a really sweet guy.” Immediately Noah felt the blush rushing back to his cheeks and he looked away for a moment. It was odd, how easily embarrassed Noah was. He usually liked to blame his pale skin for that. “That’s all you need,” he commented, chuckling. Thinking his words over for a moment, he shook his head. “Well, minus the ‘really sweet guy’ part for me. I don’t swing that way. But I am dancing with a fondue master, so I suppose either works,” he added, smirking. He’d considered calling her a ‘really sweet girl’ – which she was – but he was still a little worried. There was a fine line between flirting and liking and he’d have to take steps back from nearing the latter. Excluding this was one of them.
And then, faster than a speeding bullet, the most epic question ever posed had entered Noah’s ears. Every thought labeled ‘awkward’ in his mind was subsequently dropped and he burst into laughter – true, excited laughter, not the uneasy chuckle that he’d been using before. “Ms. McKenzie, where do you get these gems? Fondue virgin, lard ass… what’s next?” he asked, still in a fit of laughter. After his laughter had subsided, he nodded. “And yes, I’m quite sure your lard ass isn’t crushing my feet. Don’t know where you got that idea from, though. You’re really light,” he answered. It was true; though Mallory didn’t think she was tiny, she was compared to Noah. And yet, even with his taller height and her small stature, they seemed to fit together perfectly. It was like there was a Mallory-shaped hole in the middle of Noah’s body that had been empty before he’d met her. How that worked, he wasn’t sure, but it was nice. It was true, everybody had their secrets. Mallory preferred to be an open person, but this subject was just one she would not budge on. She didn’t want to seem weak for missing her brother. Not even Adrianne knew, and Adrianne was probably the person Mallory was closest to in this world. Deep down inside of her, in the very core of her soul, she knew that her family knew she was suffering in that aspect. It’s not like she showed it often. She knew if he came back, she wouldn’t be able to think of him the same. The entire build up of trust that the two had worked on for years had came tumbling down. It was strange that she couldn’t even trust her own brother. Mallory hated how he kept thinking about this. She never thought about it this much in her normal every day life. Today was different. Today, she was with a boy. The physical contact and the way they were connecting was reminding her very much of how she missed the older brother figure in her life, hovering over her and making sure she was alright at all times.
If Mallory knew Noah’s secret, she wouldn’t be being such a flirt. She’d take it slower. Mallory didn’t like to be pushy, even if it was for the good of her own self. She’d wrap her arms around him and promise that she wouldn’t hurt him. Not in a relationship sense or a friendship sense. She couldn’t say she’d never hurt a soul, because she probably had. Mallory was very opinionated and sometimes that would get her into trouble. She didn’t hold back. There was always a situation where somebody needed the headstrong person to point out the obvious that nobody else would. That headstrong person always seemed to be Mallory. She didn’t put a lot of thought into her words or actions. They just kind of flowed, and if it was an issue then she would fix it later. She wasn’t too worried about offending Noah. Mallory had already called him a fondue virgin and was practically stepping on his toes with her entire body weight. Not much more could offend the boy, right?
She saw his frown and automatically wanted to wipe it right off of his face and plaster that grin back on it. Mallory wasn’t an untrusting person. It just took her a little while to truly open up to somebody. Noah seemed to be a trustworthy person, but she still wasn’t so sure. Wouldn’t spilling her guys sound like she wanted attention from him? Mallory was pleased with the amount of attention she was receiving now. She felt his hand touch hers, and then he linked their pinkies. A widespread grin grew across her face, and she giggled. “It’s not you.” She stated with a reassuring nod. It really wasn’t Noah. Mallory was a bit angry with herself because she was letting these things get to her at a time like this. “It’s just this situation with my brother. Not Roman, and not Carter, but Landon.” Mallory explained. She suddenly felt like a complete fool. She had said too much. Now Mallory had to tell the whole story or it would seem like she was too weak to talk about it.
“See there’s six of us; Landon, Adrianne, myself, Carter, Colleen and Roman. My mother was diagnosed with Cancer only about a year after Roman was born. She’s in remission now…” Mallory trailed off, beginning to get a little bit wary of telling him. She wanted to stop herself, but if she did it would make her look bad, and Mallory didn’t want to look bad. She regained her composure and continued. “But Landon and I carried a big load with my mother’s health. My father purposely stayed at work a lot because he was afraid to come home to see how my mother had progressed or not progressed.” Mallory stopped again when his hand was linked in hers. She linked her fingers within his, the spaces filled between each hand. She bit down on her bottom lip, looking up at him with a smile. He was making her feel a bit better about telling him. After all, he’d be the only one who knew other than herself.
Mallory wanted to continue, but she couldn’t find it in herself to do so. The fear was lumping in her throat and the anxiety was beginning to show a little bit. She pushed herself though, and continued on with the explanation as to why she was so spacey today. “Landon left.” She said simply, with a nod. It was the nicest way to put it. If she said ‘Landon abandoned me.’ Or ‘Landon couldn’t take it anymore,’ then she would probably look like she was looking for comfort, which in a way she sometimes wondered if she was. Mallory didn’t share it with anybody, so if she was telling somebody she had to want something, right? She wasn’t sure if it was comfort or reassurance, or maybe both. It was a predicament that she couldn’t solve by herself. Then again, she could just be searching for somebody to listen.
Though Mallory hadn’t noticed the figure standing in the doorway, listening intently until she had made her way into the kitchen, opened the refrigerator and gotten a bottle of water out then dashed out of the doorway and up the stairs. Mallory felt a wave of anxiety come over her. Adrianne had heard her explanation. Adrianne had always felt bad for not helping out more, and this just made her conclusion truer. She shook her head slowly, then looked up at Noah. “Sorry, she’s not always polite.” Mallory said with a chuckle. She suddenly felt as if she had left Noah hanging with the explanation, and continued again. “It’s more like a feeling of abandonment. He’s coming back… or so he says. He’s said it for about a year now. He says he’s coming before school starts again.” Mallory bit down on her bottom lip, shaking her head. “I’m just afraid of what will happen,” She finished before shoving the subject to the back of her mind and focusing again.
As Noah quoted her, she chuckled. “So we’re both hiding something,” She said softly, nodding. “I think everybody hides something. It’s human nature.” Mallory stated, feeling a lot more comfortable now that that was off of her chest. She wasn’t sure how comfortable she would be once Noah left and the house was filled with Adrianne’s angst, but she wasn’t worried about that right now. She was focused on her surroundings and how things were beginning to turn up. She didn’t want to make it seem like she was still upset, because she wasn’t.
Mallory had observed Noah every time she complimented him. The color would flood to his cheeks and he seemed to get nervous all of a sudden. She didn’t understand why people just couldn’t take compliments and go. Mallory did it, but sometimes that would make her seem conceited, which she knew she wasn’t. She nodded in response to him saying that was all she needed. At the time, it was all she needed. Her vulnerability had reached and all time high and she was pretty sure if Noah had just left all of a sudden, she would feel empty and alone. They weren’t one of those fuzzy feelings that Mallory liked. It made her feel sick and scared, mainly because he was making her feel so much better about everything. He seemed to be such a positive person, and that was something Mallory needed at this time. It was kind of like he was watching over her at the time, kind of like a guardian angel, minus being dead. “I am a fondue master, I won’t lie.” Mallory laughed at her own joke and continued to enjoy his presence.
A smile made its way onto Mallory’s face when Noah laughed. She loved making people laugh. She felt bad if it was just a soft awkward laugh, but his was a hearty and happy laugh, which made her feel good about herself, even if it meant insulting herself in the process. Where did Mallory get these gems? She wasn’t even sure. She pulled them out of the back of her mind most times and just let the words run out of her like a fountain. Sometimes they wouldn’t make any sense but that was okay, because sometimes life didn’t make sense and you needed a person to roll with that.
“I don’t know where I get them. They just kind of appear, and then I say them.” She said with a nervous chuckle. It wasn’t like her self esteem was dying inside because she was standing on top of a boy’s feet. No, she didn’t even care. Mallory knew she was fairly light. After all, she had to throw her body around in gymnastics, push it up onto the balance beam, and push it up and down when she would be on the uneven bars, which were something she loathed. Mallory gave him another sheepish grin. “Good to know I’m not breaking your feet. I’d pay the hospital bill.”

NOAH SCOTT ! [/size] seventeen, restless, quirky, independent, outgoing, the oddball - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -[/center] Noah hadn’t even realized he was frowning. It was sort of an innate reaction, he guessed; he didn’t really think, ‘Oh, I’m upset that Mallory won’t up to me, let me frown about it’. It just kind of… happened. That was pretty much routine for Noah. He was never one to think before he acted, and sometimes that turned around and bit him in the ass – but most of the time, it worked to his advantage. It was how he’d gained the reputation he had at the moment – the kid who spoke his mind no matter what, the kid who thought for himself. Noah’s mind was a playground of ideas waiting to be released, and Noah figured he was merely the host to all these ideas. He felt compelled to let everything he thought out, as if keeping them in his mind would be like etching out precious art or an epic novel.
That was why, when Mallory explained her situation, Noah had to stop himself. He found himself doing that a lot around her. She was just so… unafraid, almost. She wasn’t afraid to have fun, or to be herself, or to speak her mind and call people stupid names. A lot of people he’d met had painstakingly tried to make a good impression in front of him, or anyone, for that matter. Mallory didn’t do that, and he liked that about her. She was… frank, curt, to the point – just like him. He felt more people in the world should be like him – not to toot his own horn, of course, but it was true. People never said what was on their mind and that’s what led to a lot of the bad things in the world today.
There were plenty of fucked-up kids in Pittsburgh, Noah had realized early on. In fact, nearly every one of them was fucked-up in some sense. One’s father had died, one’s mother was a drunkard, one’s sister cut herself, one was on medication for being bipolar or schizophrenic or something along those lines. He was astonished, how many scarred kids there could be in one city. It was almost annoying, too; the majority of them used their ‘sob stories’ for attention and pity. They stayed in their past and they never grew from it. Then again, perhaps Noah was a bit biased. After hearing many of these stories, Noah knew that he had it good. His monotonous family life seemed like the life of a maharajah compared to most other kids’.
Mallory wasn’t just another fucked-up kid, though. There was something about her story that really hit home with him. Perhaps it was the abandonment factor. He could tell that, though she didn’t want to admit it, she knew she’d been abandoned, and that hurt. She’d been abandoned by Landon; he’d been abandoned by Kelsey. And they were still out there, too, both of them, taking the guilt in stride and not letting it affect them as much as it affected Mallory and Noah. He watched, entranced, as Mallory slowly explained her story. His eyes traced her face, watching as her lips faltered, her voice quivered, tears started to form in her eyes. She was holding it back, too, and that pained him as well.
Her mom had cancer. His eyes inadvertently widened and Noah contained himself, ignoring the urge to envelop her in a hug. The story only got worse – her older brother had left her right when things had gotten rough, leaving Mallory to care for herself, her siblings, and her sick mother. All of a sudden, Noah was angry – not at Mallory, but at Landon. What sick kind of scum left their own flesh and blood when his mother had cancer? Landon was like the John Edwards to Mallory’s Elizabeth Edwards, or something like that. Wait, what the fuck? He scolded himself for veering off onto such a tangent while Mallory was talking about such a serious topic. Don’t be a two-year-old for five minutes in your life. It would really help.
As she finished, Noah looked down at her, focusing all his attention on her. The lights weren’t there, the music wasn’t there, even that stupid ladybug on the table wasn’t there anymore. It was just Noah and Mallory, Mallory and Noah, and Noah was going to make sure Mallory was alright. He may have sucked at making fondue, and he may have sucked at giving compliments, but one thing Noah excelled at was being a good friend. It was simply common courtesy to be nice to someone else, and Noah believed that included being there for Mallory. This time, he wouldn’t hold back, because he knew he was helping a friend.
Pulling her into a hug, he held her there for a moment, feeling the rise and fall of her chest as she breathed. “Hey, hey, hey,” he started, stroking her hair. ’Hey hey hey’? Why do I always say that? Who am I, Fat Albert? Looking down at her, he smiled. “I’m going to promise you one thing, right here, right now,” he said, linking their pinkies again. “I will never abandon you. I know what it feels like, and it’s horrible. I never want someone to feel like that while I’m around. And even if I’m not around, I’ll call, or I’ll text, or I’ll Kyte – is that it, Kyte? Skyte? Skype, sorry – or I’ll write letters,” he promised, smiling. “I’m glad to hear your mom’s doing well. Really, I am,” he added, nodding. Now he realized why they had such a strong connection. He didn’t address Landon, only because he didn’t want to tug at her heartstrings again. Instead, he pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head and smiled. “Always remember that. I promise, and I don’t go back on a promise,” he added in a quieter tone.
He felt bad not telling her his secret, but he wasn’t quite ready to. Instead, he nodded at her and listened to her next comment. “What a riveting process, Madame McKenzie. Can I call you that? Madame McKenzie? Then, you could be MMK. Like that rapper, Eminem, but with a little more sass. ‘I’m M&M, K?’. Like that. The ‘K’ makes it sassy and totally full of awesome,” Noah commented, grinning. He snickered again at the thought of the comment and shook his head. “No, no. I’d just go back to my humble seaside abode in Brighton. Our spectacular government covers our healthcare. You wouldn’t have to pay a cent and you could visit my grandmum Molly. The embrace warmed Mallory in more than one way. He warmed her physically with his arms wrapped around her, but it was also the way he didn’t struggle to do it. Her family was close knit, but they weren’t the kind to just grab each other and let their feelings out. It felt amazing to have somebody care like that. She had friends, she had family, but none of them would do this for her. It was true; her heart was racing like a speeding bullet. When he pulled her into the embrace, she let her arms wrap around him to, laying her head on his chest and focusing on one thing. Mallory focused on his calm, steady heartbeat and tried to match hers with it. She closed her eyes, slowly letting herself calm down and letting her heart go back to its normal pace. Mallory found herself not wanting to leave the comfort of Noah’s arms. It was safe inside of them, and rather comforting.
When he lifted her head and started stroking her hair, she almost felt immediate panic inside of her. She was taken out of her safe, warm haven. She kept her composure, but didn’t let her arms leave his waist. She felt if she was still connected to him somehow, she would still be safe with him. Mallory bit down on her bottom lip when he took her hand, still keeping one of her arms around him. Her eyes darted to his, and she nodded when he said he was going to promise her something. She usually didn’t believe any of the promises that boys would tell her. At first, she was going to be the same with Noah. He had already changed her mind quite a few times. Mallory kept her eyes focused on his as he spoke.
She froze as his lips touched her forehead. Mallory had never been treated this way before, so she found it rather puzzling. Her eyes widened, and she let a small smile appear on her lips. It was almost permanent with Noah. That smile never seemed to leave her face the entire time. She didn’t entirely believe his promise at first, but now she was pretty sure she did. Mallory chewed on her bottom lip for a second before looking back up at him again. “I believe you.” She assured him, nodding. She looked at their linked pinkies again, giving him another widespread grin. “I won’t abandon you either.” She promised, squeezing his pinky a little tighter. It didn’t seem like much, but then she spoke again. “I promise.”
Mallory wanted to make sure he knew she was sure she would never do that. She couldn’t hug him again. That would be a copycat move. She surely couldn’t kiss his forehead; that was a guy to girl move. She thought of something quickly that she had seen her sister do to one of her guy friends once. Slowly, Mallory got herself up on her tip toes again, just close enough so they could be nose to nose. She leaned forward and did probably the cheesiest thing a girl could do. That’s right, she nuzzled the poor boy. It was probably one of her more embarrassing moves, but with that, she was back on her feet and giggling. That was just Mallory for you.
“Eminem is probably the best rapper alive, besides me.” Mallory teased, grinning up at Noah. She wasn’t a very good rapper and she knew that, but she could try. Sometimes she would try to rap like Lil’ Wayne whenever she was getting ready for school. Mallory would bounce around her and Adrianne’s room, giggling and throwing out random rap words and screaming ‘nigga!’ at completely random times. She wouldn’t quit her day job. Mallory was pretty sure she wasn’t going to become some famous rapper any time soon. “You’re right; The K does make it sassy. I’m not too far from sassy.” Mallory always worried if she was too sassy. It wasn’t like she had her head up her ass or anything. She just thought she was a lot more real than most of the people in Pittsburgh. A lot of people were fake, and she had figured that out the hard way.
The girl raised a brow, letting out a laugh. “Are you sure you weren’t born in a Harry Potter movie or something?” She inquired, slicking a hand through her bangs for what seemed like the millionth time that day. “Molly was Ron Weasley’s mother’s name, and she knit him sweaters with an R on it for Ron.” She tried to think of another Harry Potter-ism for him. “Oh, by the way, you don’t look so much like Ron Weasley anymore. At least, you don’t to me. You seem a lot taller than him.” She stated. “Then again, I’m pretty short. So you just might seem tall to me.” Mallory giggled again, and then noticed their pinkies were still linked. She’d have to do something about that.
For a second, she just looked at them, before stepping forward and hugging Noah again. She gave a sigh of relief, realizing she was back in the safe haven she had created for herself. “Thanks for listening, and just being here, and not completely freaking out on me for spilling my guts. I’m usually not like that, really. I’m not a selfish person. I don’t like to talk about my issues. I hate it really. I mean it feels like I’m using you as a therapist. Believe me I am not. And now I’m rambling.” She took a deep breath, still standing with her head against his chest. “Just, thank you. I’ll make you extra fondue to take home with you. I planned on doing that anyway, but you know; now you really just deserve it.” She laughed, keeping her position. Mallory wasn’t sure how she was going to feel when Noah had to leave her. She felt a bit attached already, mainly because they had made such an amazing connection. She’d never felt connected to someone like that. At least, she hadn’t in a long time. She had decided he wasn’t going home just yet, even if he wanted to anytime soon. She didn’t want him to.

He was just scared shitless right now. It wasn't that Mallory scared him, because she didn't; it was just that she could sense her attaching herself, both physically and emotionally. He mentally slapped himself for promising what he had to her, and then slapped himself again for doubting himself in the first place. His heart was pulling him in two directions and that left a very bewildered Noah. There was one side of him that was undoubtedly attracted to Mallory, both as a friend and as something more - she was pretty, sweet, and seemed to genuinely take an interest in him. And then here was another side of him, one completely and utterly scared about even being Mallory's friend. That was the side Kelsey controlled. To that side, Mallory was another girl who could take advantage of his kind demeanor and hurt him, just like Kelsey had. But one thing made Noah choose the former over the latter - Mallory was vulnerable. She was the type of vulnerable he realized, one that was frightened and alone and abandoned. If he left her now he'd break her heart just like Landon had. He couldn't let himself do that.
Holding her tightly within his arms, he looked away for a moment. He couldn't stand her line of vision, searing into his like a laser. Still the latter side of him felt undeniably angry that he'd even let himself get this far into his relationship with her. They had a relationship, right? It was just a friendship. But she was a girl, and he was a boy, and that meant that things could go further. That was enough to turn him away. As Mallory began to speak, Noah felt ashamed for not listening. He knew he couldn't, though; if he did he'd know she'd promised him back. He couldn't let himself know that, as obvious as it was. Hearing it would just confuse him even more and make him want to run faster. Already he felt his legs aching to dart for the door, into his Ducati and back home, safe and sound, where only Julie, Kent and Jenny would see him.
And then she was right in his face. What the heck? he thought to himself, several thoughts lingering in his mind. Now Noah was beside himself. What had she just said that made her want to do this? Was she going to kiss him? Bloody hell, don't kiss me, he found himself thinking, the color rushing to his cheeks once more and his heart rate quickening. "Y- you have pretty eyes," he complimented daftly, wondering why he was getting so nervous. Run, run, run, right now. The two sides were pulling at him again and Noah gulped down the lump forming in his throat. Was that an Eskimo kiss she'd just given him? Smiling, he reluctantly inched closer to her. Kiss her, silly, this is perfect timing, the reckless Noah insisted, pushing him to give into his lust. Don't kiss her. She'll take that the wrong way. There's no other way she can take it, the more rational side of him warned.
After what seemed like an age of indecision, she was back to her normal height and against his chest. Noah breathed an inaudible sigh of relief as this happened, his heartrate slowing down to a (somewhat) normal rate. He'd completely missed what she'd said about rappers. Even if he hadn't, he probably wouldn't have said much in respone. Noah had never been one for rap anyway. There were a few rappers he liked, though they weren't in the majority of his favorite artists. He liked that one Eminem song about gravity and that was about it in terms of him. "You don't seem sassy," Noah added in absentmindedly, smiling down at Mallory. Blinking a few times, he scratched the back of his neck. "I... I mean... you're not sassy. Just the name is. M&M, K, I mean. Not Mallory. Mallory is a pretty name."
He chuckled under his breath when Mallory mentioned Harry Potter. "No, but I've gotten that a lot," he informed her, nodding. It was true - even back in Brighton, Noah had continually been told that he looked a lot like Ron Weasley. At first, he hadn't liked it - who wanted to look like the geeky second banana? Then, when girls had told him they thought Ron was cute, and that he was their favorite character, Noah had started to like it. It was a pretty usual occurrence if someone told him he looked like Ron, and he didn't mind it anymore. "A bit taller, eh? Well, I'm not quite sure how tall Ron Weasley is, but I'm not that tall for a guy."
When things finally seemed to be going back to normal, she stepped forward and hugged him again. The majority of Noah would have separated himself immediately and created an awkward environment for Mallory and himself. However, there was something natural, something almost easy about wrapping his arms around her. For some reason, her intentions seemed good. She didn't act at all what Kelsey had acted like - Kelsey had been hard-to-get, flirty, and over-the-top. Mallory was mellow, sweet, and vulnerable. And there was something about her that attracted his attention and kept it there. He wasn't sure whether it was her cute crooked smile or her effervescent personality. All he knew was that he liked it. Holding her close, he simply nodded at her thanks. "You deserve someone to listen to you, and you're not rambling. You're being real," he insisted, beaming down at her. His heart rate quickened again looking down at her and he gently turned her chin upwards. "Hey, hey, hey - none of this 'I'm selfish so I'll make you some fondue' stuff. I think this will suffice," he murmured, leaning down and pressing a quick kiss to her lips. As soon as their lips touched, he felt himself drawn to her even more, and he kept her there in his arms for a moment more. Breaking off the kiss, he pulled away till their noses were touching and smiled. "You're worth a lot more than fondue, you know."
