Addie was probably more tired than she had been in the longest time, but that didn’t stop her from staying up late on this summer night. It was so much more peaceful when people weren’t around the lake, which made it easier for the girl to think and write. She had been in a different world all day, and whenever she wasn’t in her right mind, she always went somewhere quiet to get her thoughts out. She couldn’t concentrate at home with Skyler and her parents fighting, or with him blasting music; there was always something. That’s why she found herself at the Monongahela shoreline, sitting on a large rock close to the water. It wasn’t too late, probably around nine o’ clock. She hadn’t checked her phone in awhile. For all she knew, someone could have called her to go home and she wouldn’t have even known. Addie was in her own little writing zone, where the only thing that mattered was her notebook, the pencil, and her thoughts.
Today, she had been very much focused on her mother and helping Skyler. God knows he needed the help. With everything that had happened to him, she wasn’t surprised he hadn’t been the one that commit suicide. His father had left him, then his sleaze bag of a mother remarried her father. Addie didn’t think remarrying was too terrible. Her father gave Skyler everything he could and tried to the best of his ability to support everything he did. He treated him as if he really were his own. But Skyler couldn’t see that. No, all Skyler saw was Taylor. That was something that annoyed Addie immensely.
No matter how many times she sat up at night listening to him cry, hugging him, trying to comfort him with soothing words, nothing seemed to work. Therapists didn’t seem to work either. It was all so confusing. Did he want to get over it? Addie didn’t know what went on inside the boy’s mind. He feigned that smile whenever he was out in public around people, trying to make himself seem semi-normal. Was it so hard to do that for her instead of letting her watch him suffer every day for the rest of her life? It was a terrible thing to think, and the thought probably never even crossed Skyler’s mind, but it crossed hers all the time. Did he want to change himself? He put forth no effort into doing so.
Then there was her mother that she missed daily. Of course, Addie didn’t put the pain on Skyler. Skyler had never met Addie’s beautiful mother. Addie thought she was beautiful not only on the outside, but on the inside. She had been on the girl’s mind ever since she had walked through the park with Jasey and saw the swings. Addie remembered when her mother would put her on the huge wooden swing in their backyard and throw her towards the sky, begging her to hold on to the ropes on the side. She also remembered when her mother sat her down and made her watch one of her all time favorite movies, The Secret Garden. It made Addie terrified to get on the wooden swing out back only because they said that the woman in the movie died from falling off of that swing. Addie didn’t want to die from falling off of a swing. She thought that would be tragic.
Addie looked up from her notebook, taking in how much darker it had gotten. The sky was dimly lit by the last bits of sunlight left in the day. She could barely see the words on her notebook. She bit down on her bottom lip, closing it and setting it on the rock beside of her. She leaned her head back, taking in all of the peacefulness around her, and for a second she just wished she could stay there forever.

Roscoe loved his family. Most of the time. He might not like his father, but he loved him and craved his approval. Dodger could get on his nerves and make him feel badly about himself sometimes, but Dodger was his brother, and he idolized him. And his mom was basically his best friend. But sometimes, he just needed to get the hell out of his house.
Dodger was spending the summer at home, as ever. As much as Roscoe might complain about him during the year, he was glad to have him home. That is, until Dodger’s laptop broke. That meant that if Dodger wanted to IM people and check his Facebook every five minutes, he had to use Roscoe’s PC, which was, of course, in Roscoe’s room. And having his brother basically camping out in his room to use his computer was quickly getting the best of Roscoe.
So he left the computer to his brother and went downstairs, where his mom was cleaning up from dinner. He offered to help, but she was basically done. His father was in the living room watching some sporting event or another. So Roscoe could pretend to be interested in this particularly dull baseball game, or he could go for a walk. He chose the latter.
In jeans and a plain white tee shirt, Roscoe slid his feet into the sneakers he had left by the door and grabbed the blue sweatshirt he had left on the coat rack by the door. He told his father that he would be right back, but the man didn’t seem to notice. He paused, considering verbalizing the statement again, louder. Then he decided that it hardly mattered and opened the door, closing it gently behind him.
Roscoe walked down the street, no idea of where he was headed. It was getting late – the sun had set, but the streetlights had yet to flicker on. He hated that time of night, when the darkness started to settle. The streetlights would click on soon enough, making the night time darkness more bearable. But for now, it was a chilly summer night. He couldn’t find the moon in the midst of the trees above him, and only saw a handful of stars. He frowned to himself and started walking slowly down the sidewalk.
Soon, Roscoe realized that he was just a few blocks from the Monongahela River. The shore was always very peaceful at night. There weren’t many people who hung out there at night, at least partially thanks to the rumor circulating the middle schools that there was a sea monster in the river. He smiled to himself, starting towards the shoreline of the river.
The beautiful view was lost in the darkness. Roscoe looked behind him just in time to see the nearest streetlight click on. Smiling softly, he turned back to the water, now just a few feet in front of him. He looked around, taking a moment to notice another figure on the shore; the only other. Someone was reclining against the biggest rock on this side of the river; he remembered watching Dodger climb up the same rock and jump off when they were younger. He was never as much into rock-climbing as Dodger. He didn’t want to fall and hurt or embarrass himself, so he left the rock-scaling to Dodger.
Roscoe wondered if he should go to the other person on the beach and introduce himself, so that they didn’t think he was being creepy or anything. But then he thought that it might be creepier to go and randomly start talking to someone without knowing first who they were. And then he had himself caught in a loop, making a fool out of himself no matter the route he chose. He frowned, hating situations like these.
Officially at something of a standstill with himself, Roscoe plopped down on the shore and sat. This was hopeless. He supposed he would just enjoy himself as he had intended, and if the person was creeped out by him or simply as intrigued by him as he was by his or her presence, they could come up to him. That seemed to simplify matters slightly. Which was good, as Roscoe had started to stress himself out over the matter. He crossed his legs and let out a long breath, slightly more relaxed now. Though, he was now anxious about what this other person would think or do. So he tried to ignore him or her by looking out at the calm water instead of at the rock.

Addie could feel someone’s presence other than her own. Now usually, Addie would run for the hills, but today she was so relaxed she didn’t even care that somebody was behind her. It was dark though, and she wasn’t sure if it was a person or an animal. She didn’t want some kind of angry bear to come running down and attack her. That would be a serious tragedy. If she moved, this vicious animal would probably charge at her, if it even was an animal. Addie was realizing how absolutely ridiculous she sounded. She sat up, slipping her flip flops back onto her feet and spinning around on the rock to see the boy sitting there. She knew that boy very well. Now Addie was wondering if he wanted to be left alone or not.
Either way, she was going to approach Roscoe. If he wanted to be left alone, she would take the hint and start walking back home. After all, Addie knew she’d let a person know if she didn’t want to be around people. She stood up on the rock, stepping down onto the ground and grabbing her bag off of the top of the rock. Addie adjusted her sweater, making sure it wasn’t halfway up her stomach or anything. That would be embarrassing; but Roscoe was her best friend, and she was sure if she was looking like an idiot he would probably point that out to her. She rolled her eyes at the thought and started her trek over to the boy.
Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail, but scrunched into a curly kind of style. She had wished she had left her hair down today. Addie had no idea it was going to get this chilly due to the night time air. Addie pulled her sweater closer to herself, before finding herself standing next to Roscoe. “You weren’t going to say anything to me?” The girl teased, sitting down next to him on the shoreline. She let her bag fall from her arm and set down next to her before quickly slipping off her flip flops again and setting them next to it. Addie found herself concentrating on the water more than anything else. Sometimes she just wanted to run full speed ahead and jump into the chilly water, letting all of her cares melt away. It may sound cheesy, but it was one of her many philosophies to get her stress away. Though she had never tried it, it was one of the things on her to-do list.
“I’ve been sitting out here practically all night, so if you’ve been back here long, I really didn’t notice you.” Addie said with a grin, nudging him playfully. She would feel terrible if he had been sitting back there for a long time, waiting for her to turn around and talk to him. Addie didn’t focus very well lately. She was in her own little world ninety-nine percent of the time and lately, she wouldn’t have it any other way. If she truly focused on all the little things going on in her life, in Skyler’s life, and in her parent’s lives, she would probably be stressed out way more than she truly needed to be. Addie had always believed a little bit of drama and stress made life interesting, and it taught you that sometimes you had to deal with the pain and the happiness. But having too much stress was never a good thing. In fact, she found that sometimes it pushed her over the edge.
She turned to face him, crossing her legs so she was sitting Indian style. It had been a little while since she had talked to Roscoe face to face. Summer meant that she didn’t see her friends every day anymore. Sure, they’d keep in touch but she hadn’t seen him in awhile. “So, how is summer treating you?” The girl questioned curiously. She knew how summer was treating her. Addie was bored the entire time unless she locked herself in her room with her guitar and a notebook. Skyler wasn’t hanging out with her anymore because not only did he have football, but he was always wallowing, which was one of the many things that bothered Addie. She wanted to slap him in the face and try to get his attention so he could see what he was doing to himself and others. Not only was it starting to get old, but hiding it from everyone was starting to get old too. Addie hadn’t even realized the pattern she had created. She had been sitting there in her own thoughts, taking a hand full of sand and sifting it through her fingers, then doing it again with more sand. She stopped her antics and looked back up at Roscoe, giving him a warm smile.
